Gurdwara Darbar Sahib is located in Narowal district and 4.5 Km inside Pakistan from Indian border. It is therefore the second holiest site of the Sikh religion after Gurdwara Janam Asthan at Nankana Sahib – the birthplace of Guru Nanak. Here, Guru Nanak gave the three principles of Kirat Karo, Naam Japo, Vand Chako, which means work hard for a livelihood, keep remembering God and share your bounties with the world. In the recent expansion, it became largest gurdwara in the world. Guru Nanak chose to spend last 18 years (1521-39) of his life at Kartarpur.

During the lifetime of Guru Nanak, the governor of the area, Dhuni Chand met with Guru Nanak at Pakhoke and granted him agriculture land on the right bank of river Ravi. On the Gur’s acceptance of the land, he decided to settle there, and a small building or hut was constructed. Kartarpur thus became first spiritual center. There is a reference in the historical books that the guru formally laid the foundation of Kartarpur on March 13, 1572 (Bikarmi year 1515). Apart from Dhuni Chand Guru Nanak disciple Doda was helpful.
The present building was built in 1925 at the cost of Rs. 135,600 donated by Sardar Bhupindar Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala State. It was repaired by Government of Pakistan in 1995, and fully restored in 2004. The site contains original water well which used to supply water to the fields.

The building is square in plan with Angitha sahib on the ground floor and main prayer space at first floor. A circumambulatory corridor runs in the outer periphery of the building. The building is finally surmounted with a dome.
