Name of Site: Jaulian Stupa and Monastery
Location: Taxila
Date of Construction: 2nd Century AD
Jaulian, one of the most important stupas and monastery site of Taxila. It was built in the 2nd century AD. The site devastated in the 450s AD during the invasion of White Huns and later abandoned. subsequent rulers such as the Hun King Mihirakula persecuted Buddhist living in the region, as a result the site never recovered. The site is situated on a hilltop. The important feature of the site is central stupa, 27 peripheral stupas congaing 59 small chapels depicting scenes from life of Buddha. The monastery comprised of two quadrangles around which monastic living quarters were arranged. The architectural form of monastery is similar to that of nearby Mohra Moradu.
