Name of Site: Mohra Muradu Stupa and Monastery

Location: Taxila

Date of Construction: 2nd Century AD

The site of Mohra Muradu is located close to the modern village of the same name on the top of a hill. After taking a flight of steps, the first monument come in front is an impressive stupa located on its western parts and a monastery on its eastern parts. It was constructed in the 2nd century AD. The site remained occupied until the end of first millennium AD. The circular stupa rest on square pedestals decorated with stucco reliefs depicting scenes of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. The monastery consists of two courts of cell of monks, with additional hall for collective purpose.  A kitchen was planned at the extreme end of the monastery. Six niches of the monastery consist of remains of sculptures of Buddha in various poses. In one of the cells a 12 feet high stupa with chatras has been found.
