Brief Description
The Tomb of Nur Jahan; Nur Jahan with the real name of Mehr un Nisa, wife of Jahangir, died in Lahore on December 18, 1645. After a modest funeral she was buried in a tomb which she designed for herself. The tomb rest on square platform measures 134 feet on each side and slightly over 19 feet high. There are four octagonal towers at the corner to frame the front façade. The plan is based on fourfold symmetry. There are outer chambers on the exterior while the tomb is marked in the inner middle chamber. The grave of the empress and her daughter Ladli Bagum is located in the subterranean chamber. Deep opening slope downward provide light and ventilation to the tomb chamber. The interior of the tomb is beautiful decorated with stems of poppy and other flowers. The original outer finishes and flooring was stripped of by the Sikh in the late eighteenth century.
